Uh-oh.."Sun Waking from a Deep Slumber": NASA

It seems like I'm becoming the chairperson of the Department of Apocalyptic Studies here at the Catholic Jedi Academy, but it's hard to ignore the weird stuff that keeps popping up.  The latest is a report from the head of NASA's heliophysics division (we may have to add a class on that here at the Academy!), Richard Fisher, who announced that, "The sun is waking up from a deep slumber, and in the next few years we expect to see much higher levels of solar activity. At the same time, our technological society has developed an unprecedented sensitivity to solar storms."

In other words, be prepared for trouble with power grids, air travel, radio communications, and GPS.  While I have some concerns about the first three, I'm not that troubled by GPS systems going down.  In fact, maybe it will help keep people focused on driving instead of drifting back and forth into opposing lanes of traffic while trying to read the miniscule GPS screen suctioned to their windshield.  But, I digress.

There's nothing to fear, however, the government is right on top of this one.   Yep, NOAA (the oceans and atmosphere group)says they are making "rapid progress" on figuring out "space weather forecasting."  Can't you just see the evening news report, "Well, Larry what's tomorrow's forecast for solar storms?"  "There's a 50% chance of strong solar activity.  Make sure your generators are ready to go, avoid air travel, and you might want to take a map along in the car, just in case."
