Pray for Pakistan

Yesterday, the Holy Father included prayers for the flood victims in Pakistan in his Wednesday audience.  To date there are 1,600 dead and over 2 million homeless.  It makes me think of how blessed we have been in this country to have good housing and well run emergency systems.  Even when disaster strikes, we don't see the vast devastation that happens in countries like Haiti and Pakistan.  That is to take nothing away from the suffering of people after disasters such as Hurricane Katrina, but the resources available to people in third world countries are so meager.  The pope is asking for relief services to provide assistance that is desperately needed in the area.  Caritas, a European version of Catholic Relief Services, has made an appeal to raise $5.5 million in relief.  Catholic Relief Services is also sending aid to the area.  The flooding has affected 16 million people who are now being hit by mudslides, disease and crop failure.
