The Latin Mass is to be celebrated in the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception this afternoon for the first time in 40 years. The Basilica, in Washington, D.C., is the largest church in the United States. Father Zuhlsdorf of "What Does the Prayer Really Say" fame, has up to the minute commentary on this event over at his blog. Father Z's motto is "Save the liturgy, save the world." (In addition to his "Say the black, do the red" slogan - which refers to avoiding too much experimentation in liturgy).
It's interesting to see the Latin Mass returning to Catholic worship in the United States. Certainly there has been a lot of confusion in liturgy over the past 40 plus years. With all of the scandals and attacks that are mounting, a return to a strong Catholic identity may be just the antidote needed.
