Chinese Earthquake Toll Tops 2,000

Look, I know that it's uncomfortable to be sitting in an airport for a few days waiting for the volcano to settle down so you can be on your way.  But, why isn't the tragedy of the earthquake in China further up in the news cycle?  I  had no idea that the death toll had exceeded 2,000 people.  The devastation is enormous.  Is it a case of distance?  China is so far away that we don't feel connected to the disaster in the same way we did to Haiti?  Or is it selfishness?  The volcano isn't too far from us and we may be affected by the enormous ash clouds?  Or is it just that a volcano erupting is more of a novelty and we're curious?

In any case, the people in the Tibetan area of China are suffering immensely.  In comparison, waiting for a few days in an airport terminal seems almost luxurious.
