OMG!

Grrr!  That's All I Can Stands,
And I Can't Stands No More!

Part of a series of periodic rants and occasional tirades, that will boil over periodically into this Author's posts.
In this installment:

OMG!

Grrr! That's all I can stands, and I can't stands no more!
I have had it!  I cannot take all of the wanton use of God's name everywhere -- on the street, in movies, in TV commercials and shows, on the radio, in the newspapers, on Blogs, on social web sites, as a web site's name, when "texting", and in a musical number from the Broadway show, "Legally Blond"!

Hey, folks! Perhaps you vaguely remember something involving a Commandment from God Himself, prohibiting the casual, disrespectful, purposeless use of His Holy Name.  It's called the Second Commandment.  In that Commandment, God states, "You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain."  [The Book Of Exodus 20:7; The Book Of Deuteronomy 5:11; The Gospel According to Saint Matthew 5:33-34.]

It makes my blood boil when I hear people saying, "O my God!"  They use "God" in the same fashion as they inject other overused, unoriginal and trite exclamations: "Whatever!"  "Cool!"  "Way!"  "Awesome!"  "Da Bomb!"  "Kickin'!"  "Totally!"

People, the word "God" is not slang; it's a Name -- it belongs to Our Creator. "O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth" (Psalm 8:1)  What are people really trying to say when they resort to "OMG!"?  They are trying to say:
     "What a surprise!"     "I'm shocked!"     "That's wonderful!"
     "That's horrible!"       "Amazing!"         "Huh?"
"Oh no!"                    "Oh yes!"            "I'm telling you... ."

Say what you mean.  Mean what you say. Or as Our Lord Jesus put it, "You have heard that it was said to the men of old, 'You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.' But I say to you, Do not swear at all.... Let what you say be simply 'Yes' or 'No'; anything more than this comes from the evil one." [The Gospel According To Saint Matthew 5:33-34,37; The Letter From James 5:12; The Catechism Of The Catholic Church, paragraphs 2142-2167]

The same principles apply to the sinful and vain use of the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, of His Blessed Mother, and of the Saints.
